Who knew that in 2007 the mobile industry would make a drastic change? Yes I’m talking about the iPhone and how it changed the way we think about a mobile device and the mobile web. Get ready for another game changer.
Hidden among the hoopla over their branded Nexus One, Google quietly started a shift in how you can purchase phones: Carrier-independent. Soon, if successful, you will no longer need to bundle the phone you want with whatever the carrier has to offer. Pick the phone you want independent of the service you want. Carriers will then need to compete on a quality of service and not the devices they offer; which is how the system currently works. I’ll admit the idea of someday using my iPhone on the service I choose brings a big old smile to my face.
Ars Technica has a great article about this. It goes into depth about the details and how this will change the mobile landscape as we know it today. Wired has even touched on this as well.
So what do you think? Are you ready for a game changer?
